SOCIAL CIRCLE, GA — An east Georgia city says they do not support the potential construction of an ICE detention facility.

Internal documents obtained by the Washington Post suggest Social Circle could be the site of a detention center housing between 5,000 to 10,000 people, but city leaders say no one from the federal government has reached out about plans for a facility.

“A key reason that such a facility is infeasible is because the City does not have the water and sewer infrastructure to support this type of facility. Current capacity limitations would not support a development of the size described in media reports,” a Facebook post stated. “This proposal could result in an effective tripling of the City’s population that is hovering right around 5,000 citizens.”

They add that they do not have the infrastructure to support such a large project.
