After a record-breaking February, temperatures should continue to “March” upwards, right?
Not necessarily!
A pattern change will usher in cooler temperatures mid-week, knocking afternoon temperatures down to the 50s and mid 60s through the weekend.
In addition to cooler temperatures, rain showers will move through Metro Atlanta on Thursday and Friday. They will taper off on Saturday before our next round of rain returns on Sunday.
Check out the temperature trend for next week: These numbers are not “locked in” to the forecast, but they give a guidance as to what we could expect for next week. Morning lows will dip to near freezing, and afternoon highs will struggle to climb out of the 50s -- a far cry from the upper 70s and low 80s we experienced last month!
Next week’s cold snap serves as a reminder that the Average Last Spring Freeze for Metro Atlanta is March 23, and a freeze has been recorded as late as April 25, 1910.
If you are inspired to work in the garden this week, stick to cold-hard spring plants like daffodils, tulips and hyacinths. If you plant summer bulbs like gladiolus and caladiums, you will need to protect them during the spring freeze!
Y’all… I want to plant my caladiums and gladioli, but it’s too early! Winter returns next weekend! Average last spring freeze is in late March, but #Atlanta has had a freeze as late as April 25! #ATLwx #ATL #GAwx pic.twitter.com/c7CUXSVFdU
