Holiday Weekend Forecast: Cloudy skies, below average temperatures through Monday

Friday usually marks the “getaway day” ahead of the Memorial Day Holiday Weekend, but it also marks the nicest day in the forecast.

Sunshine will warm temperatures in the upper 70s to low 80s, and a northeast breeze will continue to pull dry air into the region. This means that a nice, dry afternoon is in the forecast.

However, a Carolina coastal low will begin to move inland, and this will impact the weather in North Georgia on Saturday and Sunday. The coastal low will not have enough time to be considered tropical, though the National Hurricane Center is monitoring it through the weekend, as illustrated below.

Closer to home, the coastal low will track west-northwest, bringing cloudy skies and cooler temperatures to North and Central Georgia. Rain showers are likely with this low, however they will be limited to areas east of US 41 and Georgia 400 -- including the Lake Lanier and Lake Oconee areas. The animation below illustrates the Futurecast Radar for this weekend.

In addition to the cloud cover and rain showers, breezy conditions will prevail this weekend. The northeast wind will gust as high as 20-25 mph, pulling in chilly air from the Appalachian Mountains.

As a result, morning lows will dip into the 50s this weekend -- and potentially the 40s in the higher elevations of North Georgia on Sunday morning!

Afternoon highs will be limited to the low to mid 70s on Saturday and Sunday, but they will bounce into the upper 70s to mid 80s by Monday and Tuesday.
