A storm system will bring heavy rain and thunderstorms to the Deep South this morning, including Metro Atlanta.

The majority of the strong storms will remain in south and central Georgia, however heavy rain and thunderstorms will rumble through North Georgia, including the Atlanta area.

Plenty of wind shear (change of wind direction and speed from the ground to higher in the atmosphere) will be available to produce wind damage around the Metro Atlanta area.

Thankfully, air temperatures will be too cool (mid to upper 40s) to support widespread strong to severe thunderstorms, but heavy rain and gusty winds will still be an issue for the morning commute.

Timing Out the Heavy Rain

The storm system will bring heavy rain to the Metro Atlanta area before sunrise and the line of heavy rain will push east through 9am.

The animation below illustrates the Futurecast Radar for this morning.

The rain will exit out of Metro Atlanta by 9am, but not before producing as much as 0.5 inch to 1 inch of rainfall in a short amount of time. Short-term flooding may be a concern for areas experiencing poor drainage issues.

Gusty Winds During the Rain

In addition to the heavy rain, gusty winds will also be an issue for through Metro Atlanta.

Winds will pick up through sunrise, gusting as high as 30 to 40 mph. As a result, a Wind Advisory will go into effect for all of North Georgia for Wednesday.

The gusty winds will be present during the heavy rainfall Wednesday morning, adding another layer of difficulty to the morning commute.
