Kirby Smart goes deeper on his transfer portal comments, confidence in offensive line before Miss St

ATHENS — It was a little strange for Kirby Smart to immediately reference the transfer portal in his postgame interview with CBS’ Jenny Dell. Georgia had just finished off previously No. 1 Tennessee in dominant fashion.

The win spoke loudly about the culture and program that Georgia built.

“A bunch of kids that love this place. We took zero kids out of the transfer portal,” Smart said on Saturday. “They all love it here and they compete their ass off.”

If you want an example of that, consider the play made by Nyland Green on Saturday. The redshirt freshman cornerback was the No. 72 overall prospect in the 2021 recruiting cycle and Georgia’s highest-rated defensive back signee in that cycle. He’s not competing for snaps at cornerback right now, playing behind Kelee Ringo, Kamari Lassiter and Daylen Everette.

Yet there he was on Saturday, chasing down a Brett Thorson punt to pin Tennessee deep. Green very like could’ve been Tennessee’s best defensive back. Yet he’s more than content to contribute in any way possible for this Georgia team.
