After a little bit of a slow start, second ranked Georgia overwhelmed FCS opponent Samford 33-0 Saturday afternoon at Sanford Stadium in Athens.

Georgia improves to 2-0 on the season while Samford falls to 1-1.

The Bulldogs are now 30-1 at home dating back to 2017.

Georgia settled for field goals on its first two drives before scoring touchdowns on three of its next four possessions.

“We still had around 500 yards of offense, we didn’t punt in the first half, we still had a good day,” said senior quarterback Stetson Bennett. “But, it was not our day; it was not the day we wanted to have. We’re going to get that fixed on Monday.”

Bennett played the first 2 1/2 quarters going 24-34 for 300 yards and a touchdown. The senior QB is now 49-65 for 660 yards and three touchdowns in the Bulldogs’ first two games of the season.

Bennett’s favorite target was the entire receiving corps as 11 different Bulldogs caught a pass in the first half.

Georgia’s leading receiver was tailback Kenny McIntosh with five catches for 61 yards. Kendall Milton led all rushers with 85 yards on 10 carries.

The Georgia defense also continued its early season dominance as the Bulldogs kept their second straight opponent out of the end zone. Samford finished the game with just 128 total yards. The Bulldogs from Birmingham punted nine times and also turned the ball over with a fumble in the first quarter.

“I thought they played hard, fast, and understood the game plan,” said Georgia head coach Kirby Smart. “The defensive staff did a nice job of putting the game plan together. Let’s be honest, that team was overmatched and outmanned. We executed well and we turned the ball over some.”

Georgia gets back in action next Saturday as the Bulldogs travel to play South Carolina in Columbia. It’ll be the SEC opener for Georgia with kickoff set for noon. The Bulldogs’ next home game is September 24 against Kent State.
