The city of Atlanta plans to shut down Woodruff Park for at least two months to repair thousands of dollars worth of damage done by Occupy Atlanta protesters.

Parks Commissioner George Dusenbury says the park will be closed starting next week.

"The park took a lot of abuse," said Dusenbury.

He says repairs to the park's damaged irrigation system and electrical systems will cost taxpayers more than $30,000.

"This is funds that could have been used elsewhere in the city," said Dusenbury.

Occupy Atlanta organizer Tim Franzen spoke with Channel 2 Action News about the money being spent on the repairs.

"They're willing to spend $30,000 to shut down a park for three months to fix some grass as opposed to some of the real serious problems that are affecting people in Atlanta," said Franzen.

Dusenbury says they city plans to work with the police department when it comes to enforcing ordinances banning overnight camping.
