The day before Ryan Brunn was charged with killing 7-year-old Jorelys Rivera he flat out told the GBI he had nothing to do with it.

“Did you cause the death of that girl?” Brunn was asked by an investigator during a polygraph test.

“No,” said the 20-year-old maintenance man.

The test showed that was a lie. The GBI released video Thursday of interview that brings new insight into the mind of the man described as a “sociopathic killer” by GBI director Vernon Keenan.

The interview and polygraph test was performed by Keith Sitton, GBI special agent in charge of the polygraph unit five days after Rivera disappeared.

During his sentencing hearing last week, Brunn changed his tune. He admitted in graphic detail to raping and killing the little girl at the Canton apartment complex where he worked and she lived.

But Brunn didn’t come anywhere close to that confession when he first sat down with authorities. At times he appeared nervous and at others relaxed while engaging in conversation with Sitton.

The two talked about an ex-girlfriend of Brunn’s, if he considered finishing high school and the fact that Brunn smokes pot about once a day.

The interview and three polygraph tests took about an hour and a half.

Before Sitton hooked up the polygraph monitor, Brunn did admit that he lied to investigators when he told them he had not been to the trash compactor where Rivera’s body was eventually found. Burnn says he was paid extra to operate the trash compactor because he got paid to do it. But he didn’t want to tell the GBI that because he was afraid it would make him a suspect.

Sitton then connected Brunn to the monitor and asked him the same nine questions three times, taking a break between sessions.

“Did you participate in any way in the death of that girl?”

“No.”

“Did you cause the death of that girl?”

“No.”

“Did you participate in any way with disposing of that girl?”

“No.”

“Do you know for sure who caused the death of that girl?”

“No.”

Sitton tells Brunn the two questions he did poorly on were, Did he participate in death of the girl? And, did he dispose of the body? “You’re not doing good on this test,” says Sitton.

“I’m not holding back,” says Brunn. “I promise you. I’ll take the test again.”

Brunn was charged with Rivera’s death and plead guilty to the murder last week. He was to serve a life sentence in prison before hanging himself in his cell two days later.
