Smoke from nearby wildfires turned Salem skies varying hues of orange throughout the day, as ash floated down, creating an apocalyptic scene. The air quality index reached “hazardous” during the afternoon, threatening possible health problems to the population at large, however it has been downgraded this evening. Many businesses have been temporarily closed for the health and safety of their employees. Areas in Marion County have been evacuated, however, no evacuation orders (at any level) have been issued for Salem or the immediate surrounding areas and city officials have stated that the water remains safe to drink. The main source of the smoke is the Santiam Fire, burning to the East, estimated at 131,000 acres. We will continue to provide updates on the situation as they develop. The photos, which are unedited, were taken throughout the afternoon and the location of each photo is detailed in the comments. 📸: @eddybinfordross #Salem #salemoregon #marioncounty #oregon #oregonfire #oregonfires #oregonwildfires #wildfires #fire #smoke #santiamfire #wildfire #wildfireseason #fires #clypiancoverage
