Authorities say a 14-year-old boy who was struck by a Henry County patrol car has died.

Authorities said Chandler Jacob Weems of McDonough died Sunday morning at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston.

He was airlifted to the hospital after being struck on his bicycle Saturday afternoon as he was exiting a driveway.

Henry County police say the teen exited a driveway on his bicycle and struck by the patrol car near the intersection of North Ola and Turner Church roads. The accident happened around 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

Henry County police Sgt. Joey Smith says the officer "could not avoid the accident.”. Smith says the officer, identified as Denise Allyson Romano, 35, was "very distraught" after the accident.

“On behalf of the Henry County Police Department and Police Chief (Keith) Nichols, we express our sadness and sympathy to the family for their loss,” Henry County Police Sgt. Joey Smith said in the statement.

The accident is being investigated by the Georgia State Patrol.
