Teen Arrested in Family Double Shooting

(WSB Radio) -- A 16-year-old DeKalb County teen surrendered to police Thursday, the last of four suspect sought in a double shooting Wednesday.

DeKalb County Police say the shooting that left one juvenile dead and another critically injured.

Police Spokeswoman Mekka Parish tells WSB it happened around 2 p.m. Wednesday at 2717 McAfee Road in Decatur.

"There were two groups walking down McAfee Road and for undetermined reasons, they began to exchange words.  That escalated to an argument and ultimately shots were fired," said Parish.

13-year-old Jernard Wheeler died at the hospital.  The other boy, whose name has not been released, is hospitalized in critical condition.

Under arrest are three adults and a juvenile. Police identified a woman and two of her sons:  52-year-old Viola Goodman; 25-year-old Shontonious Hawkins; and 20-year-old James Fanning.  The 16-year-old who is also Goodman's son is believed to be the one who fired the shots.

Parish tells WSB that the dispute had apparently been going on for several days, and erupted into the deadly violence.  All of the victims and those accused in the crime are believed to be related.  The suspects all face murder and aggravated assault charges.

The 16-year-old victim remains critical condition at Grady Hospital.  The deceased has been identified as Jernard Wheeler, 13.
