Getting snow in Georgia is unusual, and sledding in that snow is even more so.
But four sledding accidents in three hours, including one with a very serious injury? That's what the Forsyth County fire department had to handle.
It started at about 2:30 Wednesday afternoon with a call of an injured sledder.
"It was a 17 year old male who was sledding on the grounds of Liberty Middle School," says Division Fire Chief Jason Shivers. "He, unfortunately, slid into a fire hydrant and sustained very serious injuries."
That call was followed by others, one of another 17 year old hurt, then a call about a 9 year old and still another of a 21 year old injured while sledding in the snow.
"All were taken to the hospital with varying injuries," Shivers tells WSB, "but none were as serious as that first one."
The accidents took place in different parts of county and all were unrelated.
Shivers says one of those who was hurt, whose information he would not disclose, was injured when he was on a sled being pulled by an ATV.
"That brings a whole new dynamic into the physics involved in the accident," says Shivers. "You're reaching greater speeds while sledding and, as you can imagine, when that sled hits a solid, immovable object, the sledder gets hurt."
Shivers says in all cases the sledders were sledding in areas not designed for recreation. The fire chief says if people want to sled they should find an open spot rather than an area with hydrants or other
