A sizable increase in car break-ins in Sandy Springs has police warning residents to be more careful.
Captain Keith Zgonc tells Channel 2 Action News in February of 2011, there approximately 50 break-ins for the month compared to 85 this February.
"Most of these crimes are crimes of opportunity," said Zgonc.
He says people are stealing computers and GPS units. The thieves are not just hitting store parking lots, they're hitting people's driveways.
Lee Lewand says last month, someone broke into his car outside of his home.
"I was just mad. Why does somebody come take my stuff in my driveway in my house," said Lewand.
He says never leave your car unlocked or anything of value in your car.
"You just don't take anything for granted and realize if there is something in your car that is of some value, just don't leave it in there," said Lewand.
Police say overall there has been a 65 percent spike in break-ins.
