In Peachtree City, the golf cart is a way of life. But now police are reminding drivers that drinking isn’t part of it.
The carts seem to outnumber the cars in the Fayette County town. But police are now reminding drivers that the same rules apply from cart to car. Golf carts are fine, but alcohol is not.
Peachtree City Police Captain Rosanna Dove tells Channel 2 Action News they’ve arrested 17 people in the last 15 months for being drunk behind the wheel of a golf cart.
“A lot of times they are based on boisterous behavior, complaints from other pedestrians over drivers on the cart path,” Cpt. Dove said.
The drunken cart drivers have also contributed to 72 golf cart wrecks in a little more than a year, says the city’s Fire Marshal.
“The nature of those calls are anything from falling off the golf cart, rollovers, golf carts striking objects or trees, and cars vs. golf carts,” said Peachtree City Fire Marshal David Williams.
None of the accidents have been deadly, but Williams says they have caused serious injuries.
Police say if you are drunk behind the wheel of a golf cart you will face the same penalty as those busted with DUI in other motor vehicles. You’ll lose the same points on your license.
This comes after Governor Deal signed a law earlier this month making golf carts street legal.
The legislation that creates a new class of motor vehicles for golf carts. The law allows golf carts with some safety features capable of traveling up to 20 mph on the roads if local jurisdictions allow it. The law goes into effect in January.
