Suspect in fatal Lawrenceville wreck has history of DUIs

Both vehicle and scooter at Lawrenceville Police headquarters

A Gwinnett County man is facing numerous charges in last night’s fatal wreck involving a motor scooter in Lawrenceville.

The accident happed on Grayson Highway around 10 p.m. Police say Tony Morris was intoxicated at the time his Jeep Cherokee struck the scooter driven by 55-year-old Marcell Smith of Lawrenceville.

Sgt. Chris Ralston says Morris initially left the scene of the accident but evidence led them to his home about a half mile away where he was found with the vehicle behind his house.

“I don’t know if he knew the extent of what he had done at that moment, but he was interviewed here at the Lawrenceville Police Department and subsequently arrested and charged with vehicle homicide,” he tells WSB’s Sandra Parrish.

Morris is also facing charges of DUI, driving on a suspended license, hit and run, and failure to yield.

Ralston says Morris has received multiple DUIs and had his license suspended three to four times, the most recent being two years ago.

Morris is being held in the Gwinnett County Jail without bond.
