A man is dead after being found engulfed in flames in his motorized wheelchair in southwest Atlanta . And investigators say they don't suspect foul play.
The incident happened Saturday afternoon in southwest Atlanta.
Witnesses say they saw the smoke and heard cries for help from the man in a wooded area near Metropolitan Parkway around 5:00 p.m.
“Somebody's down there and they said, 'he's on fire, he's on fire,'” witness Melvin Swinger tells Channel 2 Action News.
“There were like six or seven people trying to save him,” says witness Marly Franklin “But the flames were so great, they couldn't save him.”
Some Atlanta Firefighters happened to be across the street and responded within two minutes, but they say by the time they put the fire out, the man was dead.
“The wheelchair was engulfed in fire, and it was like he had tried to get out of the wheelchair and he was laying on the ground,” says Swinger.
Investigators spent hours at the scene, searching the area where the man was found, as well as his wheelchair. They say there were no obvious signs of foul play.
The GBI is also investigating the incident.
