UGA’s Warren McClendon speaks for first time on fatal crash

It’s been more than two weeks since the SUV crash that killed a Bulldogs’ player and staffer and injured two others. On Tuesday, we heard from one of the two others for the first time.

“It was rough for me a couple days, but I’ve been talking to a psychiatrist, and it’s getting better day by day,” said Warren McClendon. The Dawgs’ star offensive lineman spoke to reporters in Mobile, Alabama Tuesday as he participated in Senior Bowl workouts. (The therapy) is very helpful. At first, I was kind of trying to push away from it, but it’s helpful.”

McClendon was injured, along with UGA recruiting department staffer Tory Bowles in the Jan. 15 accident in Athens. The single-vehicle wreck of the SUV they were passengers in killed Bulldogs’ recruiting analyst Chandler LeCroy - who was driving - as well as fellow teammate Devin Willock. The crash came only hours after the team’s parade and Sanford Stadium celebration of a second consecutive national championship.

McClendon was asked what he remembers of that night. “Really not too much....not too much. Just...when the wreck happened, I kind of got knocked out, so I really don’t remember too much,” said McClendon. He did go on to say he and the three others were on the way to a Waffle House to meet other teammates.

As for remembering Willock and LeCroy, said McClendon: “They were both hard workers...they both were goofy. They wanted to make you laugh. They always were a light in the room of dark, so everytime you were down, they always made me laugh.”

McClendon is honoring teammate Willock by wearing Willock’s #77. Senior Bowl officials gave McClendon #77 to wear for the game. McClendon wore No. 70 with the Bulldogs.
