A Gwinnett County teenager, found guilty in the murder of a pizza deliveryman, is sentenced to life in prison but will have the possibility of parole.
Both the prosecution and defense agreed Reginald Lofton could not receive life without parole because he was only 14 at the time of the murder of Shane Varnadore.
It took the jury just two hours to convict him last month in Gwinnett Superior Court. An older co-defendant, Jermain Young, has yet to stand trial.
Lofton’s attorney argued during the trial that it was who Young intended to rob Varnadore and the teen wanted nothing to do with it. She says Lofton was only guilty of taking the pizza after the victim was shot.
Lofton, now 15, expressed his condolences to the Varnadore family, but maintained his innocence.
“I do want to say I’m sorry for your loss, but I did not kill your son,” he said before sentencing.
Judge Randy Rich expressed his displeasure at the possibility the teen will one day be free.
“I wish I could give you more time than I can because I think you’re a cold-blooded killer,” he says.
