Griffin police recover fentanyl-laced drugs disguised as candy

GRIFFIN, Ga. — A routine traffic stop in Griffin turned into a major drug bust.

Griffin police officers tried making a stop on a vehicle in the parking lot of El Charro Mexican Restaurant on North Expressway at 7:40 p.m. on Wednesday.

Instead of pulling over, the driver jumped a curb and got onto the road. The driver then ran a stop sign, hit a car and crashed into a tree.

The three people in the car that was hit were taken by ambulance to WellStar Spalding Regional Hospital with complaints of injuries. Their current conditions are not known.

The two men in the car, 46-year-old Johnny Freeman and 34-year-old Artaevious Goggins, were arrested after trying to escape police.

Investigators recovered 61 grams of ecstasy laced with fentanyl that was made to look like candy, 19 grams of marijuana and a stolen gun.

TRENDING STORIES:

Both Freeman and Goggins are being held in the Spalding County Jail on several traffic, gun and drug charges, including trafficking of MDMA/ecstasy and trafficking of fentanyl.
