Schools announce Wednesday morning delays due to heavy rain in metro Atlanta

SPALDING COUNTY, Ga. — Several school districts are announcing delays for Wednesday, Jan. 25, due to potential severe weather.

Meriwether County Schools will open at 10 a.m. on Wednesday due to the threat of inclement weather from the approaching storm front. They said parents and guardians can expect the bus to arrive around two hours behind the regular bus route schedule.

Henry County Schools announced delays and district-wide operations Wednesday by two hours due to projected severe weather for the area.

HCSS said the delay is due to projected severe weather for the area and the potential for elevated impacts based on current ground conditions from recent storms.

Elementary schools will start at 9:35 a.m., high schools will begin at 10:15 a.m., and middle schools will start at 11 a.m.

Bus routes will also change to reflect the two-hour delay.

The Griffin-Spalding County School System said it is delaying school by three hours due to Wednesday’s weather.

Strong Rock Christian School said they would delay school by two hours Wednesday due to weather.

High winds and rain are in the forecast for much of metro Atlanta and north Georgia Wednesday morning. However, GSCS noted due to the recent severe weather, they are exercising caution.

The high school will begin at 10:40 a.m., elementary school will start at 11:00 a.m., and middle school will begin at 11:30 a.m.

GSCS said students should be at their bus stops three hours later than usual, and no students should be at bus stops before 9 a.m.

Central office staff, maintenance staff, school principals, and morning custodians should report to work at 8:30 a.m., while all other morning employees should report at 9:30 a.m., according to a GSCS release.

Weeks ago, severe storms and tornadoes ripped through Spalding County, causing significant damage to the area. As a result, students were out of school for days before returning, recently on Jan. 20.
