Sandy Springs Police investigating mail thefts

Sandy Springs Police are investigating after security camera footage showed someone stealing items from mailboxes in a local neighborhood early Saturday morning.

“They just pulled in and went to every single house from 3:52 a.m. to 3:58 a.m.,” said Katy Harrison, a resident of the Long Island Walk subdivision.

Harrison’s security camera footage shows the driver of a white SUV checking every mailbox in the cul-de-sac before turning left in the neighborhood and returning into the frame a few minutes later.

“And I could see them stop at two more mailboxes,” she said.

The following day a neighbor texted Harrison and said someone had stolen her mail; that’s when she checked her security cameras and saw what had happened.

“I don’t know if we would’ve known about it if not for that neighbor,” she told WSB’s Jonathan O’Brien.

Harrison said the thief didn’t get away with anything special from her. “Holiday cards, requests for donations, and then one financial statement, which is the piece I’m most concerned about,” she explained.

According to Harrison, the neighborhood has license plate reading cameras, and the homeowners association has shared the footage with Sandy Springs Police.

“We are looking into it and trying to develop suspects,” the department said in a statement to WSB.

“The Postal Service takes the security of mail very seriously,” USPS spokeswoman Evelina Ramirez said.

Ramirez also urged customers to utilize their Informed Delivery service, which allows the USPS to send images that are already automatically taken during the sorting process to users who sign up for free. “USPS is now using those images to provide digital notifications to users in advance of the delivery of physical mail,” the website states.
