Drivers on a busy Cobb County roadway say they have been coming under attack.
Someone hiding in the woods is throwing sand and rock-filled socks at cars, causing some serious damage.
One driver said the rock-filled socks pushed in the grill of his car and cracked it on both sides.
Allen Ashwege said when something smashed into his car over the weekend he turned around, thinking he had hit an animal. Then something slammed into his car again.
“We were hit again,” he said.
Later, he found a sand-filled sock imbedded in his front grill. He said he went back to Kennesaw Due West Road and found several other makeshift devices along the road.
Two days later, Channel 2 Action News found a few on the edge of the roadway.
Ashwege, a former cop, put up some wanted posters around the neighborhood, offering a reward to help catch those responsible for the costly damage to his car.
“When I saw the damage, I thought we were lucky it didn't hit the windshield or even the side window, where my son was driving,” he said.
Murray Chalmers was not as lucky. Chalmers told Channel 2’s Ross Cavitt he was driving down the road after dark Monday, when something slammed into his windshield.
He said he doubled back and saw a couple of young men in the area, but had no clue what hit him.-- until he saw the signs Aschwege had posted around the neighborhood.
He called Aschwege, and then later went to the police precinct.
The dangerous makeshift devices have caused damage already, but the worry in the neighborhood is that if one of them hits a car head-on in the windshield, the results could be catastrophic.
Police said they have taken several reports and are chasing down some leads.
