FULTON COUNTY, GA — Roughly 70,000 gallons of water flooded parts of the Fulton County Jail over the weekend after a pipe burst inside the facility, according to county officials and the sheriff’s office.
The Fulton County Sheriff’s Office says inmate housing units were not affected by the flooding. Officials say, however, that administrative areas and medical rooms sustained water damage.
Maintenance personnel were attempting to repair a leaking toilet in a third-floor bathroom when the situation worsened. Fulton County Commissioner Mo Ivory says the pipe burst during that repair effort.
“70,000 gallons of water from a pipe approximately burst in the bathroom at the jail,” Ivory said.
This is not the first water-related incident at the jail. Ivory says a pipe burst in October caused damage that cost more than $1 million to repair.
“We spent a million dollars on new servers, and now they’ve been damaged by this water flood that happened,” Ivory said.
Ivory says recurring leaks and pipe failures are not isolated incidents, but instead are tied to the jail’s age and condition. She is urging the county to consider a new jail facility.
Officials say work is underway to repair the damage caused by the flooding.
