DEKALB COUNTY, Ga — Parents are demanding answers after a school resource officer got involved in a fight at a DeKalb County high school.
Video shows several students at the school throwing punch after punch until a school resource officer sprays what appears to be pepper spray in the hallway to break up the fight.
The identity of the officer has not been released.
Several parents said they are upset the officer resorted to pepper spray.
“They are innocent kids,” one parent said. “She’s a police officer. She was trained to handle this. She’s trained to deal with kids, not to hurt them.”
The school district and police are investigating the incident. Meanwhile, parents are demanding answers from the principal.
Parents said the school never notified them, “My mother called me and said your daughter just got sprayed with Mace.”
Authorities have not said how many kids were sprayed.
“There was another way to break this situation up. They could have grabbed these people and broken them up instead of spraying mase in the hallway, where all the kids at. They are innocent kids. It was a complete way; she’s a police officer. She was trained to handle this. She’s a resource officer. She’s trained to deal with kids, not hurt them.”
The school sent a statement reading:
“Several students were involved in a physical altercation that resulted in the use of OC (oleoresin capsicum) spray to regain control. EMS arrived and treated students on-site. No serious injuries were reported.”
