One person airlifted after train and car collide in Douglas County

A person was airlifted to a local hospital after a passenger train and a vehicle collided Wednesday morning in Lithia Springs.

“Douglas County E-911 operators received a call around 9:58 a.m. for a collision between a train and a vehicle around Hyde and Temple Streets, near Thornton Road,” the Douglas County Government said in a press release. “Investigators on the scene confirm the collision involved an Amtrak passenger train and a motor vehicle on Norfolk Southern Railroad tracks.”

According to the Georgia State Patrol, Jeremiah Locket, 42, was traveling east on Hyde Street in a Toyota 4-Runner. Locket attempted to drive across a set of railroad tracks without yielding, and an Amtrack train struck the Toyota’s left side, causing it to overturn.

Locket was airlifted to Kennestone Hospital in Marietta with serious injuries.

In a statement to WSB, Amtrak said the train was bound for New Orleans from New York. “A vehicle obstructed the track and came into contact with the train in Atlanta,” a company spokesperson said. None of the 32 passengers or crew onboard the train were injured.

The Georgia State Patrol is leading the investigation.
