Officer shot in the head, suspect dead after shooting at Covington motel, police say

NEWTON COUNTY, Ga. — A shooting at a Covington motel ended with a suspect dead and officer hospitalized Tuesday night.

The shooting happened at the Oyo Hotel off Alcovy Road around 10:30 p.m..

According to Lieutenant Daniel Digby, the first officer arrived on the scene and tried to talk to the couple who was arguing. The suspect then pulled a gun.

“Gunfire was exchanged between the officer and the armed individual. The officer was shot in the head,” said Digby.

According to Digby, a second officer arrived on the scene and engaged the suspect who received gunshot wounds and is deceased.

The injured officer was identified as Rashad Rivers. He was rushed to Grady Hospital where he is listed in stable condition. He will undergo surgery on his jaw tomorrow to repair the damage from the gunshot wound.

“We do ask for prayers for the officer as they continue to treat him and for his family as well... and for the other officers that responded and dealt with the scene,” said Digby.

Authorities have not released any information on the suspect’s identity.

The GBI is currently investigating the shooting.
