More lane closures coming to Peachtree Road

This is not a story many commuters will love on this Valentine's Day.

Georgia Power and the Georgia Department of Transportation are joining forces for a safety project that will close down sections of Peachtree Road.

Starting Monday, February 18th, portions of the roadway between Deering road, right near the Amtrak Station to Collier road and Piedmont hospital will be closed for construction work. GDOT's Natalie Dale tells WSB Radio it is not a road project though.

“The focus of this project is a utility pole safety program, that is a clear roadside committee initiative,” Dale explains.

So what that means is Georgia Power will be moving utility poles farther back from the road way to increase driver safety.

"If you fell asleep or you weren't paying attention and you ran off the road, you'd be able to correct before you hit a pole,” Dale says.

Moving those poles back will mean intermittent lane closures through November.

"You know, it takes a couple of days, a day or two to move one pole, so they will be there sort of moving up and down the road as time allows," Dale says.

Those lanes will be partially closed between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. each day starting Monday. Work has to be done during the day to keep folks safe.

"It is a safety function of what Georgia Power does,” Dale says, adding, “That it is safest for their crews and for the traveling public for this to be done [during] daylight hours.”

The work may be wrapped up before the fall if crews work quickly and there are not a number of weather delays.
