A hospital in Central Florida is facing a lawsuit after a mother says a nurse accidentally cut off part of her baby's left pinky finger while removing an IV feed.

The mother is expected to talk more about what happened at a law office in Orlando on Wednesday morning.

She said she was holding her 3-month-old daughter when the accident happened. And now the baby, who is eight months old, is left with only half of a pinky finger.

"The baby was sitting in my lap. I was watching them cut the tape, and all of a sudden my baby was screaming. There was blood spurting everywhere. I looked at her hand and she didn't have her finger anymore," said Veronica Olguin.

It happened last October after the 15-year-old mother brought her daughter Selena to Heart of Florida Regional Medical Center in Davenport because of a fever.

Olguin still describes the day with tears in her eyes.

"Everything comes to my mind about what happened. I just see all the blood again; all squirting all over the place, just like that day. I hear her crying," said Olguin. "It's really hard that she was born so perfect and she just cut off her finger. Now she only has nine fingers. That is really hard."

It happened while a nurse was cutting an IV cord with a pair of scissors after the baby's short hospital stay because of respiratory illness.

"It really hurts me to know what happened. It hurts me that I saw everything," said Olguin. "She did something really bad to my daughter, but thank God she's okay."

The baby is now fine, except for the loss of half her pinky. Now a lawsuit in Polk County claims the nurse is to blame.

Olguin's attorney said the hospital has not taken responsibility for the act. Her attorney has filed a lawsuit against the hospital.

"We want to inform the public; just because you're holding your baby and you're in the hospital doesn't mean your baby is safe," said attorney Lou Pendas. "I can't imagine what their defense is going to be if any. What justification can they have?"

Linda K. Vendl, Marketing Director for Heart of Florida Regional Medical Center said in a written statement, "An unfortunate accident occurred at our hospital while an experienced nurse was removing bandages from the tip of a child's finger. We rushed the child to a hand specialist, but unfortunately the tip of the finger could not be reattached. We deeply regret the harm to the child and want to express our compassion and concern for her and her family. We reached out right away to the child's family and their attorney, but have not been able to reach a mutually agreeable resolution. Again, we want to reiterate our sincere concern for the child and her family."

Olguin and her daughter will be with her attorneys at The Pendas Law Firm on Colonial Drive for a press conference at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday.
