A local skin cancer expert has a warning for metro Atlanta residents

We call it “Hot-lanta” for a reason, and that scorching, bright, sunny weather is hitting the metro this week. With the sunny forecast, Dr. Frederick Durden, a Cosmetic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Specialist from Cancer Treatment Centers of America has a warning for metro Atlanta residents: People with all skin types can get Melanoma.

Dr. Durden points out one of the most famous people to die from the disease is singer Bob Marley. “He had a melanoma present on the soles of his feet. That’s one of the important factors to consider when speaking of people of color.”

Dr. Durden also warns that those with fair skin are the most vulnerable to the sun’s rays. “If you are Caucasian or white with fair skin, you are at the greatest risk.”

Dr. Durden recommends that everyone use sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 and get a full body check once a year.
