Investigators are reviewing video from the school bus a Locust Grove Middle School student was walking to when he was struck and killed by an oncoming car. Authorities say it could be next week before we learn whether anyone will be charged in the accident.
Thomas Conner Burch,11, had stepped into the roadway at Tanger Boulevard and Locust Grove Griffin Road when a vehicle traveling the opposite direction struck him. Claudia Inez McGahee, 57, was driving the oncoming car.
The child is the son of a Henry County police officer.
According to the Henry County police department, the viewing will be held from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, April 15 at Haisten Funeral Home on S. Zack Hinton Parkway in McDonough. The funeral will be Monday, April 16 at 3 p.m. at St. James Catholic Church on Highway 155 in McDonough.
An accident reconstruction team plans to go back to the crash site to help piece together what happened Thursday morning.
A crisis team consisting of 15 counselors was on hand today at the school to help students grieve for Burch. Tony Pickett is assistant to the superintendent and he tells Channel 2 Action News the grief goes beyond just the students.
"I guess it creates a somber mood throughout the building and you have to deal with that," said Pickett.
Parents organized a memorial service Thursday night for Burch at the baseball fields where he played Little League. Rebecca Campbell says our thoughts and prayers go out to the family.
"She'll never get over it, it is so sad. I would never get over it, ever. My kids are - I am going to cry - my kids are my world," said Campbell.
"I played ball with him since I was four," said one of Burch's friends.
Investigators will be reviewing video from the approaching school bus to determine if the lights and stop arm were activated on the bus at the time of the crash.
