I-285 shut down in both directions after wreck, tractor-trailer fire under DeKalb bridge

Tractor-trailer fire shuts down all lanes of I-285 in DeKalb County

ATLANTA — A massive tractor-trailer fire has shut down all lanes of I-285 in both directions as well as Ashford Dunwoody Road.

Drivers are advised to take I-87 SB to I-85 NB as an alternative to I-285 EB and I-85 SB to GA-400 NB as a WB alternate. There are currently extreme delays in the area.

Dunwoody police Sgt. Michael Cheek tells WSB Radio, “I-285 westbound and eastbound are shut-down. And all means to go across the Ashford-Dunwoody Road bridge at that location are closed-off as well, due to concerns about the structural integrity of the bridge.” He added three people were treated for minor injuries.

Sgt. Cheek says the incident happened at 3 p.m. with four vehicles involved - one of them a tractor-trailer which hit another vehicle, sparking a fire that burned for a time under the bridge.

Southern Company Gas has a crew headed to the scene to check on the integrity of gas lines in the area.

It’s unclear if the structural integrity of the bridge is intact. The Georgia Department of Transportation said the bridge was built in 1971 and was in good condition prior to the fire.

There is no current estimated time that the road will reopen.
