Gwinnett County Police investigators say they have solved a year-old murder case.
Amy McGarity, 27, has been charged in the murder of 20-year-old Kayla Weil of Flowery Branch.
Weil’s body was found wrapped in a blanket inside a bathroom in a closed area of Chestnut Ridge Park in Hall County last October. Investigators believe she was killed three months before at McGarity’s Buford home.
“The remains were identified a couple months later and then it was determined that it happened in Gwinnett County and we took over the investigation in June of this year,” says Cpl. Ed Ritter.
He tells WSB’s Sandra Parrish the two women had been close friends at one point and the motive behind the murder is unknown.
According to arrest warrants, Weil was hit repeatedly in the head with a handgun and then strangled with an Ethernet cable. Her body was then placed in the trunk of a car and driven to Hall County.
McGarity was already is jail on drug charges when she was charged this week with malice murder, felony murder, kidnapping, false imprisonment, aggravated assault, and concealing a death.
