Woman says Lyft driver stole purse, child seat

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — A ride-share driver drove off with a woman’s purse and car seat and she says the company was no help to get any of it back, even after police got involved.

“I got a Lyft for the first time taking my son to day care,” Gwinnett County single mom Geneen Miller said.

With her car in the shop, Miller turned to Lyft to get her son to his Gwinnett County daycare.

She asked the driver to take her the short trip there and back to her Norcross home.

“I go inside to take my son inside and he’s gone,” Miller said.

With her car seat and purse still in the car.

After the first few calls and messages went unanswered, Miller started thinking it was not just an honest mistake.

“He took my purse, he stole my son’s car seat, he has everything in my purse, my identity, my Social Security card, my keys. He knows where I live,” Miller said. “I called the driver, had to be a hundred times, to the point where Lyft blocked me from calling the driver and texting the drive because I called so many times.”

The driver first messaged he did not find the items, then messaged that he returned them to her. Lyft told Miller that the driver says he never had her things.

“He sent me a message saying he returned them and didn’t charge me a return fee and after that I still got charged for the Lyft,” Miller said.

She called Gwinnett County police and filled out a police report. But police say they can’t do much without specific information on the driver and so far, Lyft has refused to provide that.

After the ride, your receipt does not show the license plate info.

“They were no help at all. Lyft was no help at all,” Miller said.

Miller thinks the driver saw the $400 cash she had in her purse, tips from one of her two jobs, when she went to grab a fresh mask.

“I shouldn’t have left my purse unzipped like that. I just didn’t think someone would be so cruel to rob or steal form someone taking their child to daycare,” Miller said.

We reached out to Lyft with questions about Miller’s specific case and questions about what people in her situation can and should do. Lyft has not answered our questions.

One thing you can do is to take a screengrab of who your driver is and what their license plate is when the car is on its way.
