MITCHELL COUNTY, Ga. — The Georgia State Patrol is investigating a crash that left two people dead and three others injured in Mitchell County.

According to GSP, the crash happened Monday evening when a Nissan was traveling south along Georgia 122 around 8:11 p.m. when it hydroplaned, causing the driver to lose control of the car.

The car spun counterclockwise sliding south into the northbound lanes, hitting a Kia driven by 18-year-old Montana Carroll, a senior at Cairo High School.

The front end of the Kia hit the right rear passenger’s side of the Nissan causing Carroll to lose control of the car and end up in the east ditch of Georgia 112, GSP told WALB.

Caroll and the passenger in the Nissan, 24-year-old Max Battensby, were both pronounced dead on the scene. Carroll died days before her high school graduation.

The driver of the Nissan, who was 24 years old, and the two other passengers in the Nissan, ages 17 and 20, were all taken to a local hospital.

According to Cairo’s high school band, Carroll was the daughter of the bookkeeper for the district’s food service department, Becky Carroll.

According to WALB, Cairo High School will have a balloon release ceremony on Wednesday and students are set to honor her at the graduation Friday.
