ATLANTA, GA — Georgia does not fare well in the American Lung Association’s new report that looks at tobacco control .
Georgia is one of four states to get a failing grade in this morning’s latest “State of Tobacco Control” report from the American Lung Association. Overall, it finds 36 million Americans still smoke cigarettes.
Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and Texas were rated the worst in the nation at tobacco control. The American Lung Association said the states scored “F”s in all five of the categories it looked at. Those categories included the strength of smokefree workplace laws, funding for tobacco prevention programs, and ending the sale of all flavored tobacco products.
The association’s Thomas Carr says they have found dangers in vaping as well.
“We are starting to see some rather worrying signs in terms of disease risks, especially for when it comes to heart disease...and for lung disease as well.”
Carr says while youth tobacco use is at a 25 year low, the totals are still too high.
California, Washington D.C., and Massachusetts received the best grades.
