Former VP Mike Pence to campaign with Brian Kemp next week

(ATLANTA, Ga.) — Former Vice President Mike Pence will join Brian Kemp next week to campaign in Kemp’s re-election bid for Georgia governor.

Kemp’s campaign confirmed that Pence will be in north Georgia on Tuesday afternoon. Kemp and Pence will speak at the Cumming Cigar Company and Carroll Daniel Construction Company in Gainesville.

Pence is the latest in a long list of names that have come to the Peach state to campaign this election cycle.

On Friday, former President Barack Obama will speak at a rally for Kemp’s Democratic challenger Stacey Abrams and Sen. Raphael Warnock.

Earlier this week, Sen. Lindsey Graham made stops for Warnock’s Republican challenger Herschel Walker.

Hamilton creator Lin Manuel-Miranda was also in town for Abrams and Warnock this month while Orpah Winfrey held a virtual rally for Abrams.

Former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley and former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie campaigned for Kemp last month. Christie will make a few more stops for Kemp.

“Georgia is ground zero when you talk about the political future of the United States,” veteran political consultant Fred Hicks told Channel 2′s Richard Elliot.

Hicks has worked on Republican and Democratic campaigns. He said these big names are not in Georgia to change voters’ minds, but to make sure those voters actually go vote.

“National surrogates serve one purpose and that’s to increase turnout with your base. And that’s what you’re seeing both parties do right now, whether you’re talking about the Senate race or the governor’s race,” Hicks said.
