A DeKalb County police officer has been arrested and charged with DUI.  Authorities say he caused a crash that sent another driver to the hospital.

Gwinnett County Police Corporal Edwin Ritter says 22-year-old Kevin Fortmann was travelling north on Sugarloaf Parkway in Lawrenceville, when a driver coming the other way turned left in front of him.

"Officers that investigated the accident found out one of the drivers, the one who was found at fault for the accident was a DeKalb County police officer," said Ritter.

Ritter tells Channel 2 Action News, Officer Mark Williams was arrested for DUI and failure to obey a traffic device.  According to the police report, Williams told the investigator he had a couple of beers and some water.

The police report stated officers also found an empty beer can inside the victim's jeep.  Fortmann told authorities it was a friend's from earlier in the night.  He took a blood test at the hospital, those results are pending.

DeKalb County police say Williams has been placed on restrictive duties pending an internal investigation.
