Gwinnett County Police arrest a Craigslist scammer on armed robbery charges.

The would-be iPad buyer had smartly set up the place of transaction at a local Target store, choosing a well-populated area in the middle of the day.  But the day of the meeting, the seller changed the venue to the somewhat secluded Century Park Apartments on Preston Parkway in Buford.  It might sound like a red flag, but his explanation sounded more plausible.

"The suspect was actually pretty slick about the whole thing.  At the last minute he calls and he says, 'I'm late for work, I had car trouble, I've got my kids with me.  Would it be possible for you to meet me at this other location?'" Gwinnett County Police Corporal Jake Smith tells WSB.

The woman agreed.

"When she arrived, the suspect was holding a box that looks as if it would contain an iPad, but when the victim approached the suspect, he produced a very large butcher knife," says Smith.

She was robbed of her money, and he ran away.

After the robbery, she gave police great details about the other Craigslist offerings of the seller, whom police identified as 24-year-old Raemonte Harris.  He agreed to come in and speak with detectives, but what he told police didn't check out.  So investigators went to meet Harris again--this time, with handcuffs.  He is now jailed without bond.

Smith says they urge people to be extra cautious when making purchases or sales online.

"When they change the venue like that, it's probably a pretty good idea to cancel until they're willing to meet at a public place," says Smith.
