NEWNAN, Ga. — The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating an officer-involved shooting in Newnan after an hours-long standoff ended with an officer shooting a suspect.
According to the GBI, Newnan police responded to a shooting on Stonebridge Crossing just after 7 p.m. Monday evening to speak with a 27-year-old man who was lying in the yard of a nearby house.

He told officers that he was shot by his father, 48-year-old Steve Richard Pete Smith, who he believed was still inside the house.
Newnan and Coweta SWAT teams responded to the home. After hours of negotiating with Smith, he agreed to come out of the house and surrender.

As he was walking backwards towards officers, Smith made a quick movement to his waistband, prompting a Coweta County Sheriff’s Office deputy to fire his shotgun at Smith. He was struck in the leg.
Both men were taken to Grady Memorial Hospital where they are said to be in critical, but stable condition. No officers were injured.

The Newnan Police Department is investigating Smith’s alleged shooting of his son.
