Kennesaw man says he was the victim of a hate crime

Kennesaw man says he was the victim of a hate crime If police determine it was a hate crime, the case could be the first to be prosecuted under the state's new law.

KENNESAW, Ga. — Kameron Gunby said he went for a walk Sunday night when he saw three men pull up in a Ford-150. Gunby says was attacked and he believes it was a hate crime.

“They rolled down the windows, they started yelling at me. And I’m, like what is going on? They start saying the ‘N’ word,” Gunby recalled. “I was trying to jog and speed up, and then they get out of the car, and they start chasing me down. And then after that, they grabbed me, and sucker punched me and then I fell to the ground.”

Gunby said his mother found him on Lakewood Drive not far from his house, laying in the middle of the street with his face all bloody.

Currently, the Kennesaw Police Department is investigating this to see if the incident is a hate crime. If it is, then this crime will fall under Georgia’s new hate crime law Governor Kemp signed back in June.

Gunby was knocked out. When his mother found him, she called 911. Gunby has lived in the same neighborhood for 12 years and said the men were random and that he never seen them before.

“By the grace of God, somehow my mom came to the other street and found me. Because I don’t know, honestly, if somebody would’ve run me over in the street or anything like that,” Gunby said.

Gunby hopes someone sees his story and calls the Kennesaw Police Department. The Gunbys are willing to put their house up for collateral to see the attackers brought to justice.
