Attention, bridge jumpers: It's not only extremely dangerous, it's illegal. Gainesville Police say teens have been jumping off tall bridges over Lake Lanier.
Dan Haygood, Director of Emergency Services at Northeast Georgia Medical Center, tells Channel 2 Action News many are choosing the Dawsonville Highway Bridge, which is like jumping from a five story building. He says it's a disaster waiting to happen.
"Open or closed head injuries, broken bones, internal injuries, you name it, depends on how they land and what they land upon," said Haygood.
Gainesville Police Officer Kevin Holbrook tells Channel 2 Action News hitting the water is like hitting concrete.
"The majority of these bridges are rather high. Depending on the current lake levels on Lake Lanier, the bridges range anywhere from 50 foot to a 150 foot drop," said Holbrook.
If you're caught, expect to be ticketed for trespassing, which could cost you up to $200.00.
