A longtime staple of Gwinnett County is closing its doors this weekend.
Gloria Still started Still Lake Nursery with her husband and mother-in-law 40 years ago. Her home still sits behind the business along Scenic Highway in Lawrenceville.
“My mother-in-law and I just had seeds that we needed to plant and we just kept planting them on the back porch… and my husband said I’ll just build you a greenhouse,” she tells WSB’s Sandra Parrish.
Still says they soon had so many plants, they decided to start selling them. The business incorporated in 1974 and now has 13 greenhouses.
Her husband, Garry, died 14 years ago and she has maintained the business since then with the help of her sons and longtime employees.
But now, Still says it’s time for something else.
“I want to do a few more things with the grandchildren and travel a bit… but it has been a wonderful adventure.”
Loyal customers are sad to see Still Lake go.
“To find another community-based nursery is kind of hard around here,” says Eric Huddleston of Snellville.
He has shopped at the nursery since the 1990’s.
“I’ve always liked shopping here versus other places because of the selection and the service; and particularly, I get plants here that I can’t find in the big boxes,” says Huddleston.
Everything left is at a discount and even the greenhouses are for sale.
Still says the florist on the property will remain open a few more months and then reopen elsewhere under new ownership.
