(ATLANTA, Ga.) — With WellStar Health System shutting the doors on the Atlanta Medical Center in November 2022, a sizeable healthcare gap has opened up in the heart of downtown Atlanta.

WSB’s Cheryl Castro caught up with Councilmember Marci Overstreet to discuss what might come of the facilities which have sat dormant for six months. The city of Atlanta placed a moratorium to prevent resale or redevelopment of the property.

“With WellStar pulling out of Atlanta Medical Center, it has left a huge healthcare void.” Councilmember Overstreet noted that the worst outcomes for the property would include luxury condos or townhouses. “A lot of people are approaching the city, and the county, about what they’d like to use that land for.”

Extending the moratorium over the parcels of land would give the city a larger say in what ends up moving in. Ideally, it would be a new healthcare company.

Grady Health System recently announced plans to open new outpatient facilities, south of I-20, which will help plug the holes until a more long-term solution can be found.
