Backers of the controversial Silver Comet Field in Paulding County won a big legal victory Monday as the Georgia Supreme Court unanimously upheld a lower court’s validation of $3.6 million in airport funding.

Justices said, in essence, there was nothing wrong with the bond issuance aimed at making Silver Comet Field ready for commercial flight. For opponent Sue Wilkins, the ruling means going back to the drawing board.

“Of course, it’s disappointing,” she told WSB’s Pete Combs. “But it’s not devastating.”

Wilkins says she’ll continue fighting the expansion of Silver Comet Field.

County Chairman David Austin continued to say Wilkins has powerful corporate backing in her ongoing legal battles against Silver Comet Field.

“Delta (Airlines) has got deep, deep pockets and they’ll continue trying to find other avenues to hold us up,” Austin said. He believes Delta Airlines and the city of Atlanta, worried that the upstart airport will take revenue away from Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, are funding opponents like Sue Wilkins. She and other Silver Comet Field opponents will neither confirm nor deny the allegation.
