Weapons carry permit holders will be able to bring their guns to Snellville’s city council meetings starting July 1 after city council members decide not to try and prevent those who can legally carry from doing so at meetings.
The gun law passed this year by state lawmakers allows those with permits to carry their guns into government buildings that don’t have security screening.
Currently there is no security screening at Snellville's city hall except for Municipal Court which is exempt from the law.
“With budgetary concerns that we have, it would be pretty extensive costs to have somebody screening all the time; the law says if you don’t screen all the time that you can’t screen,” says Snellville Police Chief Roy Whitehead.
The Norcross City Council is expected to vote next week to rename its building "Norcross City Hall and Municipal Court" as a way to prevent guns from being carried into the building.
