Fulton County fires chief appraiser after tax bills go out late

Fulton County mails property tax bills this week, two months late.

Bills typically go out in July but an error in how exemptions are calculated led to the delay in order to make corrections.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports the deadline for payment is now pushed back until mid-November, a month later than usual.

The delay in tax collection forces the Atlanta Public School System to borrow $60 million to bridge the anticipated gap in cash flow.  Interest alone runs the district $150,000.

The snafu leads to the dismissal of the county's chief appraiser, David Fitzgibbon.

Fitzgibbon blames the problem on a vendor's software.

Fulton County Commission Chairman John Eaves supports the personnel change.

"Our citizens expect and deserve government operations that meet the highest professional standards," Eaves tells the AJC in a prepared statement.

Next week, commissioners consider a proposal to get more frequent updates about tax assessments and the tax digest from the new chief appraiser.
