"Find My iPhone" app helps cops find drugs, guns

Guns, drugs, money seized in Marietta

It's a giant gun and narcotics bust in Cobb County.

Marietta Police made the roundup at the Autumn View Apartments on Franklin Road, early this morning--and it happened because a guest at a nearby hotel reported his iPhone stolen.

With the owner's permission, police used the "Find My iPhone" app to track the stolen phone to the apartment complex.

Officer David Baldwin says technology pays off more and more these days.

"Fortunately, it's working very well in our favor. We're able to use common applications on smartphones that are actually available to everybody else, but we're able to use it in a law enforcement purpose to help us solve crimes as well," Baldwin tells WSB.

Once at the apartment, the smell of pot led officers to one unit.

There, a search warrant turned up 1,100 grams of marijuana, five handguns--three of them stolen--an assault rifle, and dozens of the painkiller tablets Oxycodone.

Several people have been detained, including one suspect who tried to jump off the balcony. Police say more arrests are possible. A list of suspect and charges is likely to be released later today.
