Family of 3 feared dead in Cherokee Co. house fire

Firefighters battle blaze at Spriggs Trail home (Cherokee County Fire Department)

Cherokee County authorities still aren’t completely sure who the three people are that were killed when a home burned to rubble Wednesday morning. But there’s a bad a feeling the victims are a 19-year-old girl and her parents.

"At this time, investigators are unable to definitively conclude that the bodies are that of the Norrells," Lt. Jay Baker said in an emailed statement. "However, no one has had any contact with them today and it appears likely that in fact it is them."

Autopsies are being performed on the bodies pulled from the home and the identities may be confirmed today.

The home belonged to 49-year-old Ricky Norrell, his wife, Darlene, 46, and daughter, Lindsey, 19, Baker said. Lindsey graduated from Creekview High School last year, according to her Facebook page.

There wasn’t much firefighters could do when they got the call around 3:45 a.m. That’s when neighbors started hearing explosions coming from the home on 818 Spriggs Trail in Ball Ground, which is near the Forsyth and Pickens County borders.

“My mom called and said there was a loud explosion,” James Spriggs, a relative of the presumed victims told Channel 2 Action News.  “I got up and went out and saw the sky was lit up.”

Firefighters made it to the split-level home within minutes, but the building had already collapsed.

"It had been burning for a while," Lt. Baker said.

Two vehicles parked in the garage were also destroyed.

Authorities say there is nothing that points to foul play, but they still don’t know the cause.  They are using heavy equipment to dig down deep into the rubble in hopes they will find clues as to what caused the fire.
