DeKalb County firefighters battling a blaze at a warehouse had to run for cover because of an explosion inside the building.
The fire was at the Superior Crane Company on Woodstock Road and Moreland Avenue. The company is the one that hoists the Macy's Great Tree on top of Lenox Mall each year.
The assistant fire chief says a propane tank blew up after the fire started around 11 p.m. Monday.
“They have propane cylinders in an area that houses forklifts,” DeKalb Co. Assistant fire Chief Steve Ham said. “We had one very large explosion inside the building.
The fire spread to about 25 percent of the building.
The owner of the company told Channel 2 Action News that since only one warehouse was damaged, he will be open for business on Tuesday.
“You never want nothing like this to happen,” owner Patrick Lewis said. “Fortunately it was after hours. No one was here so no one got hurt.”
A witness said flames were shooting 10 feet into the air and spread across the roof.
Investigators are looking for the cause of the fire.
