Police have now linked Monday night's murder at a drive-in to an officer-involved crash that killed a pedestrian.
Around midnight, DeKalb County Police say 28-year old Mitt Lenox, a Taekwondo world champion, was having car trouble at the Starlight Drive-in on Moreland Avenue. When he approached Quentric Williams for help, police say Williams shot Lenox to death.
"The world has lost a wonderful person," Master Bill Lenix tellsCraig Lucie of Channel 2 Action News.
Bill Lenix says his son, Mitt, wanted to begin practicing martial arts at 18 months old.
He and his wife, Candy, taught him discipline that put him on the path to break world records.
A concerned citizen followed the suspect which eventually led to a police chase that ended in a crash in Gwinnett County. DeKalb Police Spokeswoman Mekka Parish tells Channel 2 Action News Williams fled and is still on the loose.
"There was a female passenger that was also in the car. She remained on scene, was detained, and since has been released. We have now released a bolo for that suspect in that murder," said Parish.
Meantime, one of the officers who was responding to the chase struck and killed 27-year-old Clifton Hightower on Memorial Drive.
His mother, Anna Davis, tells Channel 2 Action News how she learned of her son's death.
"They said, Mrs. Davis your son is dead. Your son got killed last night," said Davis. Sobbing, Davis said she just talked to her son last night.
Police are trying to determine if Officer Jason Cooper had his lights on at the time.
